Isayama Hajime worked nights at an internet café. He found the customers strange and often frightening. Many wandered around aimlessly, struggled to communicate, were drunk and belligerent. Inspired by these phantoms, Hajime, a quiet, polite man, wrote and illustrated Attack on Titan, one of the most popular manga to gain a following outside of Japan. The series has sold over 100 million copies since Bessatsu Shonen Magazine released the first issue of Attack on Titan 11 years ago. When its English-language televised adaptation debuted on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim in 2014, the pilot drew more than 1.3 million view.

When the anime Attack on Titan premiered, it was an instant smash hit and quickly became one of the most visible and popular anime series in the world. As time has gone on, though, the anime, manga, and its fandoms have run into issues with the messages in the text itself, which some say is fascist and antisemtitic.

It's one of the best opening episodes of an anime, ever. I remember watching it, and then inviting multiple groups of people over to try to get them to watch it with me too. 

The discomfort with the story of Attack on Titan began in earnest when the manga revealed where the Titans come from. When the lead character Eren Yaeger first left home to join the military and fight Titans, his father gave him a key to his basement, saying that he should return to investigate it when it's safe. In the basement there are books that reveal that the outside world isn't uninhabited at all, and that the Eldians, the race to which Eren and his father belong, are being kept in ghettos in a fascist society where they wear armbands to identify themselves amongst their oppressors, the Marleyans.

Attack on Titan is a breath of fresh air in the stale Shonen genre. And despite its cliché of a plot, it still manages to deliver a lot more than what the audience would initially expect.

In addition to its impeccable storytelling, Attack on Titan offers some of the most vibrant, and interesting characters ever created. The character hierarchy in Attack on Titan is something like this – you have the main characters, the supporting characters, and the extras or side characters.

All in all, Attack on Titan is one heck of a show. It's lived up to its expectations, and has continued to give us more than what we'd originally asked for. The upcoming fourth season of the show will also be its last, and while fans and critics seem sceptical as to how it'll turn out, I believe that Attack on Titan will deliver as usual, one last time.
